This is a very different story from Chaos Terrain. Instead of looking toward distant worlds, Crimson Sun drops into the shadows of geopolitical espionage—a place where intelligence is unreliable, loyalties are divided, and the mission itself may be the greatest threat.
Former Special Forces NCO Nathan Kang believed his black-operations days were behind him. Then his former commander recruits him for one final CIA assignment: infiltrate North Korea and prevent a crisis that could push the region toward war.
Inside the DPRK, Kang enters a world of political elites, black-market smugglers, secret police, and rival intelligence operations, all pursuing agendas of their own. Every contact could be a double agent. Every piece of intelligence could be a trap.
As the threat of open conflict grows, Kang begins to suspect that the operation he was sent to complete may have been built on a lie from the beginning. If he is right, the consequences will reach far beyond his own survival.
Some missions are meant to prevent war. Others are designed to start one.
A Different Kind of Story
Readers who know me through Chaos Terrain will find themselves in very different territory this time. Code Name: Crimson Sun trades speculative science fiction for a grounded international thriller, but it still explores many of the questions that interest me as a writer: What happens when ordinary assumptions collapse? How do people make moral decisions when they cannot see the whole truth? And what does loyalty mean when every side believes it is acting for the greater good?
At its heart, this is a story about one man trying to determine not only whether he can complete the mission, but whether the mission should be completed at all.
